Girls Pirate Costumes

Thanks to classic stories such as Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island featuring the infamous Long John Silver and J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan featuring everyones favorite baddie – Captain Hook, pirates and dressing up as pirates has been popular for many years. And thanks to the recent Pirates of the Caribbean movies it could be argued that Pirates have never been so popular!

Pirate facts

The tradition of Pirates wearing eye patches is believed to originate from an 18 century Arabian pirate called Rahmah ibn Jabir al-Jalahimah who lost an eye in battle!

The concept of pirates making their enemies walk the plank originates from J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan novel.

The famous Jolly Roger flag with it’s distinctive skull and crossbones is believed to have been first used by Emmanuel Wynne – a french pirate from the late 1600s.

The stereotypical pirate accent has it’s roots in Disney’s 1950 film version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, Robert Newton, the actor who played Long John Silver had a West Country accent.
